TODAY is the 188th birth anniversary of Teodora Alonso, the mother of Jose Rizal. Born in Manila in 1827, she studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa. At the age of 20, she married Francisco Mercado with whom she had 11 children. She died Aug. 16, 1911. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
