Whale dies near island in Zambales

/ 08:49 PM October 10, 2011

Caretakers of an island in Candelaria, Zambales, found an unknown specie of whale on Saturday but it died early morning Sunday, a report from the provincial government said.

The 4.2-meter long whale was first seen by the caretakers of Potipot Island at 1 p.m. on Saturday and drove the mammal away to deeper waters. The whale, however, kept on returning to shallow waters until it was stranded on a reef northwest of the island.

Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., who was touring Potipot that day after surveying Uacon Lake for a venue of a dragon boat festival there, asked the island’s caretakers to bring the whale to shallow waters so animal experts could examine and treat it.
