3 dead, 3 hurt in Quirino Highway accident

LUCENA CITY – A road accident involving a passenger bus and a tricycle along Quirino Highway in Guinayangan, Quezon province on Friday afternoon killed three persons, two of them high school students, and injured three others students, police said on Saturday.

In a report to the Quezon police provincial office here in Camp Nakar, Senior Inspector Leonardo Suaverdez, Guinayangan police chief, said the fatalities and the injured were the driver and passengers of a tricycle that suddenly cut into the lane of an incoming DLTB passenger bus (AQA 6752), which came from Metro Manila and bound for Bicol, along the highway in Barangay Bagong Silang, Guinayangan at around 5 p.m.

The driver of the ill-fated tricycle, Juliuz Siaron, and two of his passengers, Jomar Satioquia Ronan, 18, and Mary Joy Abordo, 16, all sustained serious body injuries and were rushed to St. Peter General Hospital in nearby Calauag town but were all declared dead on arrival, the report said.

Three other tricycle passengers–Aileen Macahilig Lasala, 16, and her older sibling Arnold, 17; and Jomel Satioquia Ronan, 18–also sustained injuries and were still confined at the same hospital.

The victims were all students of a local high school on their way home, Suaverdez said in a phone interview.

He added that the motorcycle of the tricycle is not registered with the Land Transportation Office.

Suaverdez said the tricycle driver tried to enter the southbound lane coming from the right shoulder of the highway when it was accidentally hit by the incoming Bicol-bound bus.

Suaverdez said police investigators found the bus driver, an Edwin Manalo, still at the accident site, some 45 kilometers away from the town proper. He was arrested and detained at the town police jail. CDG
