LUCENA CITY – Two persons were killed and one was injured in a road accident along the Maharlika Highway in Pagbilao, Quezon shortly before dawn on Friday, police said.
Chief Inspector Von June Nuyda, Pagbilao police chief, said a Raymond Transportation passenger bus (UWE 595), driven by Ariel Magalona, was traveling to Lucena City when it hit an electric motorbike, also known as an eco-bike, in Barangay Talipan at around 12:50 a.m.
The eco-bike rider, Benito Malveda Jr, 46, sustained injuries in different parts of the body and died on the spot, he said.
Malveda’s two passengers were rushed to the Quezon Medical Center in this city but one of them, Raymundo Macabuhay, was declared dead on arrival. The other passenger, Eric Loro, was still confined at the same hospital, added Nuyda.
Nuyda said Magalona fled after the accident but later surrendered to the Pagbilao police station.
Police Officer 3 Frederick Elardo, the case investigator, said the eco-bike or “e-bike” was not documented under any government transportation agency. The electric motorbike is runs on rechargeable battery.
“But from what I know, the LTO (Land Transportation Office) does not require registration of e-bike nor its operator has to be a licensed driver,” Elardo said over the phone. CDG
