The Mandaue City government will temporarily close the Umapad dumpsite after heavy rains made the roads inside the dumpsite almost impassable for garbage trucks.
Engineer Ricardo Mendoza, head of the Solid Waste Management Board, said yesterday that the Mandaue City government planned to dump its garbage for the next six months in a privately-owned dumpsite in Consolacion town – Asian Energy System Corp.
Mendoza said he had negotiated with the firm’s operations manager Renato Bande, who agreed to have the city’s garbage dumped in their facility.
He said the proposal to throw garbage in Consolacion and close the dumpsite needed the approval of Mayor Jonas Cortes, who as of yesterday was still in Germany to look into the waste facility there.
The Consolacion dumpsite only allows residual wastes from the city like batteries, paints, flourescent lamps, oil and cans.
The Mandaue City government plans to throw about 50 tons of garbage in the Consolacion facility in the first three months and reduce it in the succeeding three months. Payment of the garbage per ton will be P700.
Mendoza, however, said that the sorting station at the Umapad dumpsite would continue to be opened to make sure that what would be dumped at the Consolacion facility would be residual wastes.
“We have the control in what to throw in Consolacion and we still need to sort it out to save money,” he said.
Mendoza also said that the Umapad dumpsite was undergoing a six-hour-month rehabilitation, which jived with the temporary closure caused partially with the softening of the soil in the dumpsite, which made it difficult for garbage trucks to travel inside the dumpsite.
“Muhomok man gud ang dan sa sulod kung kusog kaayo ang uwan, osahay dili na man maagian ug truck,” Engr. Mendoza said while pointing out that if the road softens the garbage will be thrown in a nearby space inside the dumpsite.
If the Consolacion dumpsite proposal will be approved and implemented, Mendoza said three city garbage trucks with 10 tons of garbage would be assigned to dump the garbage in the alternate facility while the barangays’ garbage trucks would be assigned to collect garbage from the highway down to their respective barangays. /Jucell Marie P.
