Investigators have yet to make a significant breakthrough in last week’s killing of Makati welfare officer Mila Dumaguit even as Vice President Jejomar Binay asked the police to speed up the resolution of the case.
Superintendent Jaime Santos, Makati police chief, said that they were still gathering the testimony of witnesses and reviewing the footage taken by a closed circuit television cameras installed near the scene of the shooting.
“We’re waiting [to see] if the image captured by the camera can be enhanced,” the official said in a text message to the Inquirer.
Dumaguit, 52, had just boarded her service vehicle to go to city hall on Wednesday when unidentified men on a motorcycle fired at her vehicle at the corner of Tanay Street and Osmeña Highway in Barangay Valenzuela, Makati City, hitting her and her driver.
She died while undergoing treatment at Ospital ng Makati while her driver, Jun del Pilar, survived although his condition was reported to be critical.
The 52-year-old Dumaguit was the officer in charge of Makati Social Welfare Department’s logistics and finance management services.
Binay, on the other hand, said he believes the killing was related to Dumaguit’s job as a social worker.
“Mila [was] an exemplary social worker. She was a very efficient worker and people appreciated her work. Definitely there are those who resent this,” he stressed in a statement.
As the mayor of Makati for more than 20 years, Binay worked closely with Dumaguit. He said the slain social worker was dedicated to her profession as she ensured that people who needed help from the city government got it.
He urged the police to find Dumaguit’s killers and charge them in court.
