Teen rescued from swollen Marikina River

A 16-year-old teenager was rescued on Sunday afternoon after he was swept away by a then swelling Marikina River due to Typhoon “Lando.”

In the video, Meynard Fernando can be seen holding on to dear life to floating water hyacinths.

Fernando, a resident of San Mateo, Rizal, said that he fell into the river after slipping. His family immediately called the San Mateo Bureau of Fire Protection which immediately sent personnel to rescue Fernando.

He was rescued at the Batasan-San Mateo bridge which crosses Marikina River.

“Lando” (international name: Koppu) dumped heavy rains and strong winds in Metro Manila, which caused the water level in the Marikina River to rise to 16 meters at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

During the time that Fernando was washed away, Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 was hoisted over Metro Manila.

On Monday, the water level of Marikina River has receded to 13.9 meters as of 11:25 a.m. with two of its eight floodgates open, according to Marikina City Public Information Office. AJH/With a report from Chona Yu, Radyo Inquirer
