Marawi police chief shot dead

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines—The police chief of Marawi City was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen yesterday after he attended a command conference at the provincial police office in his city.

Lanao del Sur police director Senior Supt. Seigfred Ramos said Senior Insp. Abner Santos was driving in the Sarimanok area headed back to the Marawi City police office when he was fired upon at 2:20 p.m.

Ramos said the identities of the suspects and the motive for the killing were still being ascertained.

Santos’ remains were brought to his hometown of Pagadian City, Ramos said.
