Typhoon Lando slows down, keeps strength

pagasa-satpic-6am-10172015Typhoon Lando (Koppu) kept its strength but slowed down on Saturday morning, the state weather bureau said.

“It continues to increase its threat to Isabela-Aurora area,” the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

From 15 kilometers per hour, it moved at a slower pace of 12 kph westward.

On Friday, President Benigno Aquino III explained that the typhoon is being slowed down by Typhoon Champi outside the Philippine area of responsibility and the high pressure areas above it.

Public Storm Signal No. 3 was raised over Aurora, Quirino, Isabela and Polillo Island.

Northern Quezon, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, La Union, Benguet, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, and Cagayan including Babuyan and Calayan group of Islands were placed under Signal No. 2.

Signal No .1 was hoisted over Batanes, Pangasinan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Bataan, Rizal, Batangas, Laguna, Southern Quezon, Cavite, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes and Metro Manila.

Storm surges in coastal areas are possible, Pagasa noted.

Lando was last tracked 335 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora. It packed maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph.

Occasional rains and gusty winds will be experienced over provinces under Signal No. 1 while those under Signals No. 2 and 3 will have stormy weather, Pagasa said.

Lando will dump heavy to intense rains within its 600 kilometer radius.

Fishermen were warned to avid the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and the eastern seaboards of Mindanao. TVJ
