A Binay-Honasan or “Bi-Hon” tandem is possible after all, Senator Gringo Honasan himself said on Monday.
“I will subordinate myself to the decision of the party which I’m helping organize,” Honasan, vice president of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), told reporters when asked if he will join the vice presidential race in 2016.
UNA is endorsing the presidential run of Vice President Jejomar Binay next year.
Asked then if the so-called “Bi-Hon” tandem is now possible in 2016, the senator said: “It’s possible but it will be a party decision because this is an opportunity to articulate platforms and programs and raise the level of discourse during the coming elections.”
But the senator could not say yet when the party would make a decision though he was aware that the filing of certificates of candidacy will start on October 12.
Asked what he would do if the party picks him as Binay’s running mate, Honasan said: “What choice will I have?”
“I did not think about it , I did not consider it and I did not present myself,” he further said.
He said he has already consulted his family and friends about his possible vice presidential run next year.
“They are my primary audience. If my family and my friends can’t be behind me 100 percent, I can’t be 100 percent behind anybody including the Vice President and that’s not his decision to make,” the senator said, referring to Binay.
In case he decides to run with Binay, Honasan will become the fourth Bicolano to run for vice president aside from Senators Francis Escudero , Antonio Trillanes IV, and Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo.
“Well I’m sure all of the candidates , who have already expressed their desire to throw their hat in the ring have all the best intentions for our country,” he said.
Honasan, if he decides to run next year, also become the fourth senator to join the vice presidential race aside from Escudero, Trillanes and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
But Honasan refused to say who he thinks would be his closest rivals among the four declared vice presidential bets.
“The Filipino people will decide that,” he said.
