Festivities in a Pasig City village turned tragic on Tuesday afternoon when a sport utility vehicle (SUV) plowed into a crowd of minors, killing a 10-year-old boy and injuring 10 others.
Renz Allen Alejandrino was declared dead on arrival at Pasig City General Hospital due to the severe head injuries he sustained when a Mitsubishi Montero (CTA 14) driven by Raul Lapuz hit him and his friends on Dr. Pilapil Street, Barangay (village) San Miguel.
According to Insp. Roberto Garcia, head of the Pasig police investigation unit, Lapuz was on his way home when he lost control of the vehicle reportedly because of hypertension. He hit the victims as they were playing on the street and also rammed his vehicle into a parked car, the officer said.
Barangay San Miguel was then having its fiesta. The other injured residents were identified as Salvador Sison, 6; Renee Anne Bagol, 8; Raymond Tekiko, 12; Alvin Carlos, 13; Archie Malapaz, 15; Reden Catilogo, 15; John Dave Baris, 15; Ruby Anne Bagol, 17; Mark Alejandrino; and Alicel Antonio.
Lapuz also sustained injuries and remained at Immaculate Conception Hospital as of Wednesday. He faces charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property, Garcia said.–Jovic Yee
