Aquino leads LP meeting on 2016 election slate
President Benigno Aquino III arrived at the Liberal Party (LP) headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City on Wednesday morning to lead a meeting that will determine the ruling party’s slate for the 2016 elections.
Aquino and his convoy arrived a little past 10 a.m. However, he passed through the back entrance, avoiding the media.
As president of the LP’s National Executive Council (Neco), Aquino will lead the discussion on the party nominees for its Senate slate, as well as its candidate for vice president.
Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo has yet to officially accept LP presidential bet Manuel “Mar” Roxas II’s offer to become his running mate.
Robredo was not among those seen entering the LP headquarters.
Roxas asked Robredo to run for higher office after Senator Grace Poe declared her candidacy as president, along with Senator Chiz Escudero who will run as her vice president.
However, LP stalwart and Senate President Franklin Drilon on Wednesday morning confidently said that Robredo is the party’s vice presidential bet.
A hundred or so members of LP are attending the event, which is not open to the media.
Before the event started, the media were allowed to take photos of the early attendees. Serving as emcees were Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo, Laguna Representative Dan Fernandez, and Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao.
Senator Ralph Recto, who is among those reportedly included in the LP senate slate, was present. Other officials spotted at the event were Pangasinan Representative Gina De Venecia, Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat Jr., Quirino Representative Dakila Cua and his father Governor Junie Cua.
The party’s leaders are expected to hold a press conference to announce the decision of LP at around noon. Kristine Angeli Sabillo/RAM
