Guadalupe pedestrians finally win vs vendors

Around 70 stall owners and ambulant vendors have been ordered to leave the sidewalks on Edsa in Guadalupe, Makati City, and yield the space to their rightful users: the pedestrians.

Acting Makati Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña on Tuesday said vendors who had long occupied the sidewalks on both sides of Edsa, in Guadalupe Nuevo and Guadalupe Viejo, were relocated to nearby areas.

“Through participative dialogue, we proposed to the vendors to cease peddling along the sidewalks and assigned an area for them, to which they agreed,” Peña said.

Makati information office chief Gilbert de los Reyes said the vendors were transferred near Guadalupe Market and the side streets around Edsa-Guadalupe.

With regard to traffic management in the area, Peña said only one Cartimar-bound jeepney at a time would now be allowed to wait for passengers on the cloverleaf road leading to J.P. Rizal on the northbound side of Edsa.

The intersection was also declared off-limits to jeepney dispatchers who encourage public utility vehicles to form a queue and clog a lane while waiting for riders.
