CHARGES of multiple attempted homicide, direct assault and illegal possession of firearms will be filed against Ryan Joseph Jaworski—son of former basketball star and ex-Sen. Robert Jaworski—after he and two men shot it out with police operatives in Makati City.

The younger Jaworski escaped following the shoot-out at 1 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Chino Roces Avenue corner Arnaiz Avenue. However, he was later arrested at the nearby Makati Medical Center (MMC) where he had gone to seek treatment for a gunshot wound on his thigh.

Also arrested at the hospital was Joselito Au—the driver of the getaway vehicle—although their third accomplice, Ferdinand Parago, remained at large.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) spokesperson Chief Insp. Kim Molitas told the Inquirer over the phone yesterday that the Regional Police Intelligence Operation Unit (RPIOU) had placed the group of the 40-year-old Jaworski under surveillance for gunrunning activities.

The police then set up an entrapment operation, negotiating with the suspects to buy a firearm. They arranged to meet with Jaworski and his two accomplices early Saturday morning in front of a coffee shop at the Makati intersection.

“But the [trade of the firearm and money] did not even happen since the suspects [started firing] at the RPIOU operatives [as they] approached the meeting place,” Molitas said, adding that Jaworski’s group probably sensed they were about to be busted by authorities.

An initial report from the Makati City Police headquarters showed that the suspects who were waiting in a Nissan Sentra (WNE 425) started firing at the police which arrived in the area on board two vans.

They hit one of the vans, prompting the police to fire back. The suspect’s car later escaped in the direction of Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue.

Hours later, the RPIOU team received information that the younger Jaworski had been admitted at the MMC for a gunshot wound on the thigh, Molitas said.

The car used by the group was also found in the hospital basement. It had a bullet hole on the windshield.

Scene of the Crime Operatives from the Southern Police District said they found a casing from a gun of an unknown caliber on the car floor. There was also a shotgun rifle in the trunk along with various types of ammunition.

In 2002, Jaworski was arrested for shooting rats in a vacant lot in San Juan City. In 2004, he was wounded in both legs after he shot it out with a trader’s son, also in San Juan.
