DAGUPAN CITY—A former mayor of Bayambang town in Pangasinan was wounded when a lone gunman shot him in front of his house Thursday morning, police said.
Former Mayor Leocadio de Vera Jr., 62, was hit in his left arm as the gunman started shooting him at about 5 a.m. in Barangay (village) Poblacion in Bayambang, said Senior Supt. Rollie Saltat, officer-in-charge of the Pangasinan police.
Saltat said De Vera was talking to a security guard of a bank in front of his house when the gunman, wearing a black jacket with hood, appeared from the back of a parked vehicle and fired at him four times.
Police said De Vera drew his gun and fired back, prompting the gunman to flee.
De Vera was taken to the Region I Medical Center in Dagupan. Yolanda Sotelo/RAM
