Bombs destroy police station in Iraq, 1 dead

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq—Iraqi officials say a pair of bombs at a police headquarters in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk have killed at least one person and wounded five others.

The Thursday morning explosions targeted the main police station in central Kirkuk, which collapsed in the blasts.

Kirkuk police spokesman Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir said victims were being pulled from the rubble, and the casualty count was expected to rise.

Police chief Maj. Gen. Jamal Taher put the initial casualty count at one dead and five injured.

Kirkuk is 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Baghdad and has been an ethnic flashpoint for years among Kurds, Arabs and Turkomen who each claim the oil-rich city as their own.
