BANGKOK — Thai police say that a key suspect has told them he met with the Bangkok shrine bomber outside a train station and handed him a heavy backpack just before the blast occurred the night of Aug. 17.
Police announced the development Wednesday as they escorted the suspect to the scene of the alleged handover and also to the Erawan Shrine, where the blast killed 20 people.
National police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told reporters the suspect told interrogators the backpack “was heavy and it was a bomb.”
Police have identified the man as Yusufu Mierili. His nationality has not been confirmed but police say he was carrying a Chinese passport.
He is one of two men arrested since the attack. The suspected bomber has not been found.
