LEGAZPI CITY—Two alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were arrested by soldiers after a brief encounter in Iriga City on Friday morning, an Army official said.

According to a report released Friday by Captain Marjorie Panesa, spokesperson of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division based in Camarines Sur, the government troops were on patrol when they were fired upon by an undetermined number of alleged NPAs in the remote village of Sagrada at around 5:10 a.m.

The firefight lasted for about 10 minutes, which resulted in the arrest of two suspected rebels and recovery of two M653 baby armalites, an M203 grenade launcher and various documents.

Panesa said that the captured men were turned over to the Iriga police where they were jailed pending the filing of appropriate charges against them. Joanna Los Baños/RAM
