Criminal charges were filed on Thursday against the man who lost control of the 10-wheel truck he was driving in Marikina City, resulting in a multiple collision that left two people dead and 16 others injured.
Senior Supt. Vincent Calanoga, Marikina police chief, said that charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to property were filed against Fernando Gimera around 2 p.m. in the Marikina Prosecutor’s Office.
Before the multiple collision which involved a jeepney, two vans, a motorcycle and Gimera’s truck which had lost its brakes, the suspect had disregarded signs that banned heavy vehicles from the flyover on A. Bonifacio Avenue.
The accident killed 17-year-old Edison John Reyes and Domingo Salvador, 51. “So far, no one from the victims has hinted at negotiating with the driver,” Calanoga said. He added that of the 16 injured taken to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center for treatment, only two—Gimera and another man whose leg was “almost amputated” but whom Calanoga could not identify—remained in confinement.–Kristine Felisse Mangunay
