Mitsubishi Estate Co. announced on Monday it will build a 390-meter tall, 61-storey skyscraper near JR Tokyo Station. The new structure will be the tallest building in Japan, surpassing Osaka’s Abeno Harukas, which is currently the nation’s tallest skyscraper complex at 300 meters.

Construction of the new building is expected to be completed in fiscal 2027. The planned construction site in the Tokiwabashi area of Chiyoda Ward is more than 30,000 square meters. Currently, the JX building, which houses the headquarters of JX Holdings Inc., and the Nippon Building are located on the site.

According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an international nonprofit organization, Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates is the tallest building in the world at 828 meters. The new building planned by Mitsubishi Estate would be about the 20th tallest in the world today.

Mitsui Fudosan Co. is planning to open a 245-metre-high building in fiscal 2021 and Tokyo Tatemono Co. is planning to open a 250-metre-high building in 2023 in a redevelopment project on the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station.
