Results of INQUIRER.net’s poll on Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile’s bail.
The Supreme Court gave Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile a “special accommodation” when it allowed him to post bail for a non-bailable offense, according to a majority of INQUIRER.net readers.
In an online poll conducted by INQUIRER.net, 13,428 readers or 95.91 percent answered “it’s very obvious” that the high court favored the 91-year-old senator in its decision.
Meanwhile, 3.32 percent or 465 readers said it was only right for the Supreme Court to grant Enrile’s bail “because he is old and sickly.”
Less than one percent or 63 readers said they do not care about the issue, while 45 readers said they were not familiar with the case.
Enrile, who was detained at the Philippine National Police General Hospital for a year, is temporarily free after posting a P1.45-million bail for plunder over the pork barrel scam.
In a vote of 8-4, the high court granted Enrile’s motion to reverse the Sandiganbayan Third Division’s ruling that denied his bail plea.

In a 29-page dissenting opinion, Associate Justice Marvic Leonen said the high court gave special accommodation to Enrile, noting that “bail for humanitarian considerations is neither presently provided in Rules of Court nor found in any statute or provision of the Constitution.” Yuji Vincent Gonzales/JE
