THE camp of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile is puzzled why the Supreme Court has not issued the promulgated order a day after the high court granted the senator’s motion to fix his bail.
“We really do not know what’s happening. It’s already up to the Supreme Court. On our part, we are just waiting,” Lawyer Joseph Sagandoy, counsel of the senator, told reporters staked out at the Philippine National Police General Hospital.
Sought for comment, the senator’s daughter Katrina Enrile said in text message to INQUIRER.net: “We don’t know what’s happening.”
But Sagandoy said it could be because of the dissenting opinions the justices have to accomplish before issuing the entire decision.
Enrile has been detained at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame since July last year over his alleged involvement in the multibillion pork barrel scam.
Facing plunder charges, Enrile was ordered arrested for allegedly pocketing P172 million in kickbacks from ghost projects funded by a congressional pork fund.
Giving Enrile a chance to process his bail, the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court opened on a non-working holiday should the high court issues the official copy of the resolution. However, no order came from the SC.
The lawyer said Enrile is willing to wait for the Supreme Court to complete its work even if it would take a month to process it. After all, he was able to wait for more than a year for his petition to be granted.
“Sabi nga niya nakapaghintay siya ng more than a year kaya kaya pa niyang maghintay kahit isang buwan pa ang kailangan,” he said.
Asked about the disposition of the senator amid the wait for the SC’s decision, Sagandoy said Enrile was “very relaxed.”
Enrile’s camp hopes that by Thursday, the SC had finished the order so the senator could go back to work and participate in the discussions in the Senate. Julliane Love de Jesus, INQUIRER.net
