Researchers asked to submit papers on Pacific Rim hazards

The University of the Philippines (UP) will host the 11th Apru Research Symposium on Multihazards around the Pacific Rim on Oct. 7-10.

Young researchers, especially doctoral students, are encouraged to submit papers on the topics to be discussed.

The symposium will revolve around the twin themes of resilience and biodiversity.

Multiple hazards to be addressed include marine, meteorological and geohazards, all highly relevant to an archipelago like the Philippines, as well as coastal economies in and around the Pacific.

Apru stands for Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

The conference aims to gather experts and specialists to create and sustain a platform for networking, exchange and collaboration; highlight the Apru network of researchers and academics and their involvement with their respective economies and the region; focus on Philippine issues shared with other Apru economies and/or of common interest to other Apru members; demonstrate areas of partnership between UP and the Philippine government in the comprehensive disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM); demonstrate the academic convergence of knowledge domains in Arts and Humanities, Health, Social Sciences and Law, Management and Economics, Science and Technology, Engineering and Agriculture; and highlight the new Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

The three day symposium will feature lectures, contributed papers, poster presentations and a technical tour.

Topics to be addressed by the symposium include: Effects of natural hazards on exposed elements; methods and approaches for characterizing and mapping hazards;  identifying and quantifying multihazard exposure; communities of interest,  sectors of concern, elements of interest with specific emphasis on ecosystems, approaches to building disaster resilience and sustainability; Sendai Framework, disaster resilience and biodiversity, and convergence of knowledge domains; and collaborative transdisciplinary approaches to DRRM.
