With parts of Metro Manila and Cavite province to go dry from Monday until Aug. 13 and between Aug. 17 and 18, Maynilad Water Services Inc. has offered several tips for storing water safely.
According to Maynilad, water should be stored in containers—large and small—with covers and must be used within two days.
If it is to be used for drinking or cooking, the water must be boiled and then stored in clean and disinfected containers that can be closed firmly.
Other tips it offered were:
Use clean food-grade containers to store water for cooking and drinking. Also suitable are disinfected plastic soda bottles, glass canning jars and juice bottles.
Additional supply for drinking and cooking may be kept in the freezer.
Store containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight because light and warmth promote the growth of algae and bacteria.
Water stored in plastic containers should be kept away from gasoline, kerosene, pesticides or similar substances because vapors from these products can penetrate plastic.
Never store water in containers previously used to store toxic substances.
Empty household bleach bottles can be used to store water for cleaning.
Clean drums, cisterns and overhead tanks before filling them with water to avoid water contamination.
According to Maynilad, the rotating water service interruption will be experienced in portions of Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, Makati, Parañaque, Muntinlupa and Las Piñas in Metro Manila.
Also affected are Cavite City, Bacoor City, Imus City and the towns of Kawit, Rosario and Noveleta, all in Cavite province.

Maynilad said the water service interruption was due to the realignment of a water pipe located in the path of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) interceptor drainage line being laid out on Blumentritt Street, Manila.
The project is meant to enable the DPWH to direct floodwaters from the northern parts of Metro Manila out to Manila Bay.–Ronnel W. Domingo
