Wife hammered to death, 2 kids hurt when husband held them hostage

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A woman was killed after she was hit in the head with a hammer by her husband who held her and her two young sons hostage past 1 a.m. on Tuesday inside their house in Carles town, 141 kilometers from here.

The police identified the fatality as Leslie Jalandoon, 29 and a resident of Barangay Bangkal, Carles.

Her husband, Ronelo, 34, was detained at the police station pending filing of charges.

He told Police Officer 3 Johny Oro of Carles police that someone whispered in his ears to hold hostage his family and kill his wife.

Barangay Kagawad Lorie Banzurto, Leslie’s aunt, said Ronelo hit her niece several times with a hammer at the back of her head.

Her skull broke when the victim stabbed her head with an arrow.

The children suffered minor injuries but were in stable condition.

Oro said policemen went to the house of Ronelo after receiving report of a man taking hostage his wife and children.

He said they heard the victim, asking for help. When they called on the suspect, Oro said Ronelo told the police they were okay.

“The suspect said they were okay. But when we peeked through the bamboo wall, we saw the wife lying beside the husband while the suspect was poking an arrow at their children aged 10 and 6,” Oro said in dialect.

This prompted the police to seek assistance of the suspect’s relatives to get inside the house which led to the arrest of Ronelo.

The victim was rushed to the Sara District Hospital but was declared dead after few hours later due to severe head trauma, Oro said.
