The first post-war census under the Republic of the Philippines was held on Oct. 1, 1948, under Republic Act No. 36, popularly known as the Census Act of 1946.  The country’s population at the time was recorded at 19.2 million.  As of the latest census held in 2007, the country’s population numbered 88.57 million.
