DZIQ: Philvolcs chief calls for more quake-proof infrastructures

MANILA, Philippines—Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Director Renato Solidum on Friday urged engineers, building officials, and local government units to create more awareness in constructing earthquake-proof infrastructures.

In a Radyo Inquirer interview, Solidum said that while earthquakes could not be predicted, preparing for a strong one doesn’t take overnight.

“Time needs to be allotted in preparing for an earthquake because it is not an easy thing to do; it doesn’t take overnight,” the Phivolcs chief said.

Solidum confirmed the minor earthquake that hit Occidental Mindoro past 3 a.m. Friday but according to him, the tremor was very deep which prevented it to cause damages.

He said that Phivolcs engineers were planning to circulate comic books and other information materials that ordinary citizens could follow in constructing simple but earthquake-ready houses.

For the full interview, listen to Radyo Inquirer, DZIQ 990 AM.
