Early morning quake hits Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA QUAKE

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A mild earthquake struck this city 6:43 a.m. Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Engineer Rommel Allan Labayog, officer-in-charge of Phivolcs Zamboanga district, said the origin of the quake, which measured magnitude 4.4 and lasted for about five seconds, was traced 52 kilometers northwest of this city.

“Its tectonic and was traced to the Sulu trench,” Labayog said, adding that it had a depth of 121 kilometers.

No damage was expected, he said.

Sunday’s quake was the second tremor to jolt this city this month.

On July 16, a magnitude 3.8 tectonic quake occurring off Zamboanga del Sur also shook this city at Intensity II.
