Bayan Muna Representative Neri Colmenares will be wearing a locally-made barong Tagalog with the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) image embroidered on it on the day of President Benigno Aquino III’s last State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday.

His barong, which was made in Kamuning market in Quezon City, will also be embroidered with various issues plaguing the MRT-3. The lawmaker will also be wearing locally-made shoes to promote our local products.

“The MRT is the best example of the ineptness of the Aquino administration in delivering basic services to our people,” Colmenares said.

The lawmaker added that the MRT-3 had failed to serve the riding public with quality service despite the billions of funds allocated to it by the Aquino government.

“Bilyon-bilyong piso ang inilalaan dito pero palaging palpak at napakadelikado ng MRT. Dapat talaga ay agaran na itong aksyunan at dapat managot ang mga may kasalanan sa nakahihiyang train system nating ito,” he said.

(Billions of pesos are allocated to it but the MRT has proven time and again that it is a failure and is dangerous. The problems plaguing it should be addressed immediately and those responsible for this train system’s embarrassing state should be made accountable.)

“Aantayin pa ba ng pamahalaang Aquino na may mamamatay sa kapalpakan ng MRT bago kumilos?” he added.

(Will the Aquino government wait for someone to die because of the MRT’s failure before it acts on it?)

The annual Sona at the Batasang Pambansa has seemingly doubled as a fashion show where the biggest political figures in the Philippines and celebrities with connections walk down the red carpet dressed in their elegant gowns and attires on their way to the plenary hall. Some politicians have previously used their fashion choices as an opportunity to air their grievances.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has slammed politicians for allegedly being insensitive to their constituents by flaunting expensive clothes and pieces of jewelry during the Sona. IDL
