‘Habagat’ death toll rises to 19 – NDRRMC

THE death toll from rains spawned by the southwest monsoon or “habagat” in parts of Luzon in recent days climbed to 19, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Wednesday.

In a report late Tuesday, the NDRRMC said the latest fatalities include R-Jay Orteras, 6 months old of Bolinao, Pangasinan, who died in a landslide; Regine Velasco, 16, of Calasiao Pangasinan, who was carried away by strong flood water current.

The rains affected 124,416 persons in Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Cordillera and National Capital Region (NCR).

As many as 3,106 persons were brought to evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC recorded 14 landslide incidents, 11 cases of drowning, five collapsed structures, two tornado incidents and one fallen debris case.

In the provinces of Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Rizal, Abra, Benguet and Kalinga, the NDRRMC said 86 houses were damaged.

A total of P5-million worth of relief assistance was provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, local government units and non-government organizations in Central Luzon, Cordillera and NCR.

In Central Luzon, damage to rice and corn reached P3.9-million, while the damage to Tulariquen detour road and bridge in Roxas in Palawan was about P1.5-million.
