Soldiers discover Abu Sayyaf’s abandoned camp in Sulu

Government troops discovered an abandoned camp of the Abu Sayyaf group in Indanan, Sulu, on Sundaymorning while conducting operations to rescue victims kidnapped by the bandits.

The abandoned camp in Barangay Kagay, Indanan, was found by soldiers from the 35th Infantry Battalion, which was on a mission to rescue kidnap victims.

Col. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, said the camp might have been used as a holding area for captives.

The camp was discovered at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday, and was believed to have been abandoned by the Abu Sayyaf an hour before its discovery.

Arrojado said the camp had eight bunkers, which could accommodate around 30 people.

Following the discovery, the government troops conducted pursuit operations while soldiers from adjacent areas were alerted to block the bandits’ path.

The bandits allegedly seized a Malaysian couple from a restaurant in Sabah last May.
