AFTER President Benigno Aquino III has finally named the new Philippine National Police chief, the controversial “White House” will have a new occupant.
Police Director Ricardo Marquez, who will assume office as the leader of 160,000-strong PNP on Thursday, will also enjoy the privilege of staying in the so-called White House inside Camp Crame.
“Considering there is an official residence for the incumbent chief PNP, then he will stay in the White House,” Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesperson, said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
He said the White House is already being prepared for Marquez.
Dismissed PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima faced criminal and administrative charges over the allegedly overpriced renovation of the White House. The cost of reconstruction reportedly reached P25 million.
This was repeatedly denied by the PNP, saying that the funds for the makeover of the “White House” were donated by Purisima’s Mason brothers.
“But we are still not sure when he would occupy the White House. He has a very busy schedule,” said Mayor.
He said the incoming chief would finish all the paperwork left on his desk and other duties as erstwhile Directorate for Operations head.
Marquez will take over the leadership of the PNP when officer in charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina retires on July 17.
The ceremony for the change of command at Camp Crame will be graced by Aquino. AC
