Today, July 15, is the 64th death anniversary of poet and fictionist Florentino Collantes. Born on Oct. 16, 1896, he was among the poets who helped revive Tagalog literature. Along with Jose Corazon de Jesus, he was a participant in the first-ever Balagtasan held on April 6, 1924, in Manila. He was conferred the title “Makata ng Bayan (Poet of the People)” in 1950 by then President Elpidio Quirino.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
