Around 40 people, mostly elementary students, showed signs of food poisoning after eating durian-flavored candies in Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Caraga said on Friday.

In its social media pages, PIA Caraga said most of the victims were students from Barangay (village) Aras-asan in Cagwait who bought durian candies “sold by unidentified vendors roaming in the area today.”

“In an advisory, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officer Abel de Guzman urged the general public to take necessary precaution regarding the matter,” PIA-Caraga added.

Citing De Guzman, PIA-Caraga said the report has also reached Marihatag town and Tandag City.

The total number of victims is yet to be confirmed, it added. KS
