A Taiwanese businessman was arrested on Wednesday night for holding his wife, son and his son’s partner hostage in a condominium unit in Manila.
The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chih Chang Hsu alias Sam Hsu. The victims were his wife, Nancy Hsu, a 38-year-old businesswoman; Rance Nicole Caampued and Winiata Althea Uy. Caampued is the couple’s son while Uy is his partner. Both are 18 years old.
According to the report of Chief Insp. Arsenio Riparip, head of the MPD General Assignment and Investigation Section, the incident happened at the family’s residence in S Tower Condominium in Tondo, Manila on Wednesday afternoon.
Hsu came charging into the condominium unit late that afternoon, thinking his wife was having an illicit affair. He then held his wife, their 18-year-old son, and his partner hostage, brandishing a .45-caliber pistol.
Hsu threatened to kill the victims during the hostage taking. He also beat his wife with a plank of wood and doused the victims’ head and body with muriatic acid.
Hsu’s wife eventually escaped and contacted the police while Rance and Winiata repeatedly asked the suspect to free them until he agreed.
The Moriones police station responded to the incident and negotiated with the suspect who gave himself up several hours later.
Hsu now faces charges of serious illegal detention, grave threat, physical injuries and violence against women and children, as well as illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. With Andronico M. del Rosario
