MANILA, Philippines—The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has come up with a design for the seawall along Roxas Boulevard that was destroyed by Typhoon Pedring (international codename: Nesat).
In a statement released on Tuesday, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino proposed a double-layered seawall design that would “enhance public safety and address environmental concerns.”
“The proposed new seawall will be the first layer of defense from strong waves coming from Manila Bay during storms and other natural disasters,” said Tolentino.
The design will also enhance Roxas Boulevard as a tourist destination because the new seawall would be accessible to the public through access bridges that would be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed during off-hours and when storms and other disasters hit Metro Manila.
The proposed seawall also showed plans to add plants, mangroves and benches along the promenade for visitors who want to watch the sunset from Roxas Boulevard.
The design entails the construction of a concave second seawall which would be built parallel to the existing seawall.
“Built in accordance with the latest technology, it will be an improved structure that shall be stronger to withstand the buffering waves,” said Tolentino.
