The fire that hit St. Raymund de Peñafort Building at the University of Santo Tomas late Sunday has been completely put out, UST authorities said.

“The fire has been completely extinguished, and the cause is currently being determined,” UST said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

“UST thanks the responders from the Bureau of Fire Protection, as well as the volunteers,” it added.

Superintendent Jaime Ramirez, Manila fire marshall, said the fire started at the multimedia room on the fourth floor, which is occupied by the College of Commerce.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Rey Marcelino, deputy chief of the Manila Fire radio department, in a phone interview, said the fire started 9:12 p.m. and quickly reached the fourth alarm. It was declared under control at 10:17 p.m.

In a statement, UST’s Office of the Secretary-General said classes in the building will be suspended on Monday “to ensure safety and aid in assessing the extent of fire damage.”

“However, office work in the St. Raymund’s building will continue. Furthermore, classes held in other buildings will proceed as scheduled,” it added.

St. Raymund de Peñafort Building houses two colleges, the Faculty of Arts and Letters and the College of Commerce.
