LUCENA CITY – At least 10 passengers aboard a Manila-bound bus were hurt in a road accident along Maharlika Highway in Calauag, Quezon after their vehicle ran straight into a roadside coconut tree early morning on Saturday.

A Philtranco bus (Plate No. AIA 3044 and body no. 1875), with 29 passengers, was descending a curved section of the highway in Barangay (village) Lungib at around 4 a.m. when driver Dante Mana lost control of the vehicle, said Chief Inspector Noel Divino, Calauag police chief, in a report.

The wayward bus eventually slammed into a coconut tree on the right side of the road. Due to strong impact, the vehicle rested on its left side.

He said the driver told investigators that he lost control of the vehicle because of the slippery road caused by heavy rains spawned by Tropical Storm “Egay” (international name: Linfa).
