12 Cebu fishermen rescued after their pumpboat capsized

CEBU CITY — Twelve fishermen were rescued after their small motorized banca or pumpboat capsized at 1:45 p.m. on Friday near the Alpine wharf in Kawit, Medellin town, about 120 kilometers north of Cebu City.

Giles Anthony Villamor, Medellin municipal planning officer, said the fishermen were rescued by another pumpboat in the area.

Villamor said the survivors were on their way to a bigger fishing boat which was anchored some 200 meters from the shore.

“They were about to go fishing, but they had to board a small boat to get to the big fishing boat”, said Villamor in Cebuano.

But strong waves battered their small boat, causing it to capsize.

Villamor said the survivors did not pursue their plan to go fishing and instead returned home in barangay Kawit and Mahawak.
