THE SPIKERS of Carcar proved that their surprising opening weekend upset of the defending champions Talisay was no fluke as they swept the rest of their assignments en route to capturing the Cluster 1 leg title in the 7th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup over at the Bonifacio R. Bacaltos Sports Centrum in Sibonga, southern Cebu.
Carcar made waves as they shocked Talisay during the tournament’s opening salvo last weekend and then rode the momentum of that victory as they dumped Naga, 25-5, 25-26, 25-14 and followed that up with a 25-23, 17-25, 25-14 win over Minglanilla.
Afterwards, they notched three more victories, beating Argao, 25-16, 26-24; Sibonga, 25-14, 25-17 and lastly, San Fernando via default, to come away with a perfect record of 6-0 (win-loss).
Talisay finished second as they bounced back by defeating the rest of their opponents after that sorry loss. They trounced Minglanilla, 25-15, 25-22, and then proceeded to take down Naga by the same score. Sibonga (25-19, 25-8), Argao (25-11, 25-13) and San Fernando were next to fall to Talisay.
The elementary division saw Minglanilla take the top spot and was followed by Talisay.
The top two teams of each cluster tournament will earn for themselves slots to the quarterfinals, which will be held later this year. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
