Rollout of LRT, MRT ‘beep’ cards postponed indefinitely

The implementation of the new unified ticket for Light Railway Transit Lines 1 and 2 and the Metro Rail Transit 3 known as the “beep” card was again postponed.

“Due to the numerous technical and supply issues that have arisen which are needed to be resolved, we are indefinitely postponing the launch of the beep cards until further notice,” the MRT-LRT management said in a statement on Tuesday.

The rollout of the new beep cards for LRT 2, which was supposed to start in May, was delayed since the end-to-end testing in all stations was still in progress.

The new beep cards were supposed to be introduced for MRT 3 this June and for LRT 1 in July.

“We do apologize for this inconvenience and hope for your kind understanding as we utilize this delay to further prepare the system,” the management said.

The AF Payments Inc., an Ayala Corp. and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.-led consortium, won the contract to set up a P1.72-billion automatic fare collection system.
