NAIA runways closed at certain hours in November for arrival of Apec VIPs
Some runways of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will be closed at certain hours in November to give way to the arrival of world leaders for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit.
The planned emergency closure of runways is part of preparations drafted by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) with airline officials for a welcome befitting the heads of state.
Even then priority, according to MIAA general manager Jose Angel Honrado, will still be given to the other flyers’ convenience.
In his meeting on Tuesday last week with airline representatives, Honrado emphasized that the focus must be in reducing flight delays and diversions by ascertaining the time of arrival of the world leaders.
Honrado said in a statement, “It is only appropriate that airport management and airlines come together to prepare for the Apec meeting that will certainly benefit the global community.”
He added, “Equally important, however, we meet … to anticipate the concerns of passengers come November. The convenience of passengers is always a priority.”
According to Honrado, the airport authority will coordinate closely with airlines for the accurate itineraries of the state officials so passengers may be immediately informed if their flights will be affected by the arrival of the heads of state.
State officials are expected to arrive at least two days ahead of the November 18 Apec summit.
“As protocol a quasi-emergency closure of runways will be in place as soon as heads of state approach the runway until after their aircraft have parked,” he said.
Honrado said that the MIAA would also coordinate with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to minimize flight delays and diversions.
Also as a means to avoid delayed flights, he said, early morning closures for runway maintenance would be lifted from the arrival of the Apec participants until their departure.
The MIAA general manager added that at least 22 aircraft parking slots at the NAIA would be assigned for the use of heads of state. Secondary aircraft, he pointed out, would have to park in other airports.
Airlines have assured Honrado of their full support in ensuring smooth operations at the NAIA for the arrival of the dignitaries. SFM
