Family donates corneas of girl found dead after cheating charge

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia — The corneas of a 14-year-old were donated after the girl, accused of cheating in a school examination, fell to her death from the balcony of her 11th floor apartment in Jelutong here.

Her parents had requested for her corneas to be donated after the post-mortem was carried out.

Heng Ee High School Form Two student Tan Mie Jie left a note for her family before she fell to her death. Neighbors informed the parents after her body was found at about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Her mother said Mie Jie left notes in her pocket during the school exam last month and was accused of cheating.

“She told me that when she found out the notes were in her pocket, she was uncertain whether she should pass them to her teacher but her teacher found her holding the notes and accused her of trying to cheat. She got zero mark for her Mathematics paper,” she said.

However, in her note, Mie Jie said she felt embarrassed when her classmates asked her about the incident when school resumed on Monday after the two-week break.

Her 52-year-old father said Mie Jie was the youngest among three sisters.

“Although her school results were average, we had never pressured her for higher scores.

“I don’t believe that she would have cheated,” he said.

He said he woke up when he heard the alarm clock set by Mie Jie at 5 a.m. and saw her writing something in the living room.

“She was a jovial girl. Our family planned to celebrate Fathers’ Day at a seafood restaurant on Sunday but this will not be possible anymore,” he said.

Heng Ee High School principal Low Lim Wah, who was at the mortuary, said the school was saddened as a student had died at such a young age.

However, he said the reason for her death could not be related to the cheating case.

George Town OCPD Asst Com Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the police received a call from the security guard at about 6 a.m., saying that a body was found at the ground floor of the apartment.

“No foul play is suspected and the case has been classified as sudden death.

“The post mortem results showed that she died due to multiple injuries consistent with a fall from a great height,” he said.
