Palace assures support for Sorsogon amid Bulusan eruption

Malacañang on Wednesday said it is closely monitoring the situation in Sorsogon after alert level one was raised over Mt. Bulusan.

“The NDRRMC (National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) is monitoring and coordinating the LGUs,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing.

He said the provincial DRRM council was also “on top of the situation.

“We are aware of what is happening in Sorsogon and our government agencies are there to provide help if the situation in Mt. Bulusan would escalate,” he said.

On Tuesday, a phreatic (stream-driven) eruption from the volcano was recorded. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) expects ash fall in at least two towns although the agency assured that it will not pose any danger to the residents. Because of this, classes were suspended in the towns of Irosin and Juban.

Lacierda said evacuation has already been enforced in some communities.

An earlier report said the Department of Social Welfare and Development has prepared P365,400 worth of food packs for the residents of Irosin, Juban and Casiguran.
