Pilots advised to steer clear of Mt. Bulusan

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) advised pilots on Tuesday to avoid the immediate vicinity of restive Mt. Bulusan in southern Luzon.

Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon, the 4th-most active volcano in the country, again spewed ash before noon Tuesday prompting the CAAP to declare a no-fly zone around it.

CAAP officials issued a notice to airmen to steer clear of the area and take alternate flight paths.

According to CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio, ash from volcanoes poses serious danger to aircraft because the pyroclastic material could cause engine malfunction.

On May 7, Bulusan ejected a 250-meter ash plume.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has hoisted alert level 1 over Mt. Bulusan. The alert level means “low level unrest” and “no eruption imminent.”
