The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) offers an out-of-shelter program called “Doctor Dog,” an animal-assisted therapy pioneered by the Hong Kong-based animal charity group Animal Asia. Now operating for more than a decade, the program has 10 Doctor Dogs. Through PAWS, they visit nursing homes, adult day-care centers, hospitals and schools, among other institutions. Some of the organizations that have benefited from the program include Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Bantay Bata Rescue Center and White Cross Orphanage.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
