Jakarta to build cheap apartments above MRT station

Due to the lack of available land and the skyrocketing price of housing in Jakarta, the city administration plans to build rented apartments for low-income people above the mass rapid transit (MRT) underground station in Kampung Bandan, North Jakarta.
“The rented apartments will help low-income people because besides having no cars, they also do not own houses. Almost two thirds of low-income residents live in rented accommodation. The rent is not cheap. It is around Rp 400,000 [US$30] to Rp 500,000 per month,” said Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama when visiting the MRT project location in Kampung Bandan on Wednesday.
Ahok stressed the city administration would not impose any rent on the cheap apartments.
“Our cheap apartments will not need to be paid for but tenants will be required to pay between Rp 5,000 to Rp 15,000 to maintain the environmental sanitation,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
He also said the apartments would be connected via pipeline networks to supplies of liquefied natural gas and clean water.
“They will be equipped with LNG and clean water supplies for efficiency reasons. With the LNG supply, tenants will pay between Rp 40,000 and Rp 50,000,” he said.
