Cloudy skies greet students on first day of classes

The entire country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening, the state weather bureau said on Monday, the start of classes.

Some 23 million public school students are expected to return to school today, the Department of Education said. Private schools are set to resume classes next week.

A ridge of high pressure area, associated with warm weather, is affecting Northern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

No tropical cyclones are expected to develop or enter the Philippine area of responsibility.

Light to moderate winds coming from the south to southeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and from the southeast to east over the rest of the country, Pagasa said.

The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate.
