2 LRT trains collide due to technical glitch; at least 1 hurt

An oncoming train of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) hit another train along Monumento station on Saturday morning due to a technical glitch.

In a report by radio station DZMM, a passenger identified as “Bria” said the train she was riding in bumped into another train which was in a halt at around 7 a.m.

“Sobrang lakas po ng impact (The impact was strong),” Bria said.

LRTA spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera said there was a power fluctuation in the area, which messed up the communication between the two trains. He added that the impact of the crash was not too strong as the oncoming train was moving slowly.

“Mabagal naman ‘yung takbo ng tren so dine-determine namin kung ano talaga ang nangyari (The train was moving slowly, so we’re still determining what really happened),” Cabrera told DZMM.

The passenger said the driver tried to stop the engine but the brake did not work.

“Nawalan daw po ng communication ‘yung sinsakyan namin sa kabilang station (The train we were riding allegedly lost communication with the other train),” she added.

No passenger was reportedly hurt in the accident, but Bria said the driver of the train they were riding in sustained injuries.

“Ang report lang sa akin, tumama ‘yung ulo sa dashboard. Nothing serious naman (The report that reached me said that he hit the dashboard. It’s nothing serious),” Cabrera said.

As of writing, the LRT route from Roosevelt station to Monumento and vice versa is not passable.

Cabrera said normal operations are expected to resume this afternoon. IDL
