Former Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Friday suggested that President Benigno Aquino III convene the National Security Council (NSC) immediately for discussion of options for the Philippines in case of a security crisis caused by China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
A tense radio exchange between a US spy plane and the Chinese Navy in the Spratly archipelago on Wednesday “says a lot,” Lacson said.
“I think the US is sending a strong signal to China and the international community that these new developments have serious geopolitical and security implications,” Lacson said in a text message to reporters.
Potential security crisis
Such encounters could lead to a confrontation, he said.
“My concern is, it only takes an aggressive action from any party in interest, no matter how insignificant, to spark a dangerous armed confrontation that could lead to war,” Lacson said.
A meeting of the NSC would be a good opportunity for the Philippines to discuss the South China Sea dispute and look for options in dealing with a potential security crisis, he said.
“Planning ahead of a potential security crisis will serve best our country’s interest. This is a serious issue that needs study and enlightened discussion among our security officials and top policymakers,” he added.
